Using revit structure 2009... I am trying to make a beam family where i can add a symbolic line extension at each end to represent the beam bearing on a wall. instead of the beam symbolic line terminating at the face of the wall, the symbolic line would extend over top of the wall. I have added an extra piece of symbolic line and locked it to the "stick symbol left" reference plane, locked a dimension on to the line and it works fine when i load it into my project. However, when i do the exact same thing on the right side (end of beam) and load it into my project, revit tells me it cant make this beam type. Does anyone have a work around?

Hi, Can you show a screenshot or a sketch? I think, since you are just trying to show a symbol, can you make one type for the right and one type for the left?
