I have built a series of windows which I am having difficulty getting to display correctly. I have attached an example of one giving me trouble, this is a t shaped window - however when the cut plane intersects it it won't cut the window element itself (see attached image - the cut plane is intersecting the 'leg' of the T) . I have spent a long time trying numerous different approaches to this and none have worked statisfactorily, the window family is made of a combination of face based generic model components. I have adjusted the visibility and everything else I can think of - if it was a regular chaped window I could disable the visibility of the window frame element and insert detail elements in their place however that won't work in this situation and strikes me as particularly inefficient. It seems to me that my problem is the use of a continuous sweep to form the window frame, however using seperate sraight sections would then give me a problem at the corner mitres+ be a pain in the curse. What I really need is someone who understands the way revit windows handle visibility to explain it to me - at the moment I am fumbling around in the dark...

Hi, i don't have Revit here so I can't open your family but I bet there is something about the "Visibility" of the elements, it's no matter if you have a continuous sweep around the panel, the effect is the same, check in the visibilty box the "Cut" parameter for all your objects, You have that problem ONLY when you insert that window in a project ?? OR in the Family too????

It's the way that you created the windows. The family consists of nested windows, but these have been created as Generic models rather than windows, which do not cut in plan. If you check the visibility settings of the components you will see the 'When cut in plan' checkbox is greyed out. You will need to create these as windows which can then be cut.

I'm having this exact problem with a custom Window that I created. It is listed as a window and nothing is nested into the window family that I created. The window I made is a 4x8 Pane Window but has the bottom right pane taken out so it only has 7 panes on the bottom row. I need the 7 panes of to show up on the first floor and the 8 panes to show on the second floor. I have attached some images. I already checked my window and all the visibility is set to show when cut. I don't understand what the problem is. I've spent too much time trying to figure this out.

Thanks for the input, I originally used the face based generics because the window template was producing windows that didn't cut. I recreated the nested elements as window components & rebuilt the window, I tested it as I went and it performed correctly until I added the bank of line based transom/mullion elements, at which point it went pear shaped. I tried replacing the line based components with plain old in family sweeps, but it still doesn't work. I am feeling somewhat frustrated with this - would hate to have to make all irregular windows as in family elements... any ideas?

Did you check in the visibility settings for the sweep that this is checked for when cut in plan? I would be tempeted to meke the window that you created as a curtain wall rather than a window.

Yes I have changed the visibility. It seems to me that the visibility falls over once I nest a few elements into the window. I could make the window using curtain wall, course then my scheduling gets messy. Or I could hide the 3d elements in plan and set it to show detail elements - the thing is I shouldn't have to... I spend quite a bit of time on my custom family elements with the intention that I will do them right once and then they will save me time in future. Of course I could fudge this particular window on this particular job - thats what I have done in the past, however I have now got to the point where I want to understand why they don't work as I expect them to. Thanks for your suggestion though.

I just did a very quick test window and it worked and cut as expected in the project. In my case I did not nest any window families as I have typically experienced issues with doing this in the past and prefer to compile them as separate windows in the project as I get more desirable results. Anyway back to the issue at hand. In my example I modelled the window frame as an extrusion in elevation. I did not adjust the visibility for anything, leaving it all on the defaults (On). I edited the shape of the opening in the wall as required. Loaded it into the project, with my cut plane at 1800mm (6' approx.) I could see the 3 mullions correctly. I then adjusted my cut plan to be at 900mm (3' approx.) as you can see only 2 mullions are now visible. Let me know if this helps.
