I've looked through the archives to see if there were any others with this problem but i didnt find any so i started this thread.

I've been having some trouble importing a file from 3ds max to revit. I've followed the tutorial from revitcity (which is great btw) to do the import and everything is fine until i render the object, which i usually dont do until after i've applied all the materials. The problem is that for some reason, materials that i have as glass turn out black when rendered. When I have the object in shading its transparent as the glass should be with no indication of any other material. Only if I render the glass area with a non-transparent material does it show up. One more pc of info is that I have other layers with a different glass material and it shows up fine. I have checked the .dwg file and i didnt find anything.

Im using revit 2009 and 3ds max 2009. The 3ds max model is not mine so im not sure i can post any images here but i hope i painted a clear picture of my dilemma.

Any idea whats going on?

I have come across this problem too when rendering in Revit. I found two possible reasons for this. One being that if the glass is touching another surface it can cause issues such as blacking out. The other reason may be with the render settings such as refractions etc. I have experienced a similar problem exporting a Revit file to 3DS max where some materials or certain objects were rendering out black. I was told this is to do with the object being flipped when exported or something but didn't know how to rectify.

Would love to know the resolution for this!

There are a ton of different reasons this could happen, I would need screen captures of your render settings as well as materials in order to point you in the right direction.

you may have to low refraction settings, or you may even just be using the scanline renderer?? mental ray materials require the mental ray renderer
