Hi all,

I'm trying to put a standard sized door into a wall that is about 1.0 m thick, see the image below, with a couple of major differences. First, the door needs to swing into the wall cavity. Second, I need the doorway to taper out from the door itself (see the image if that doesn't make sense).

By editing the family of a door family I managed to get the the door to swing into the door cavity but I can't get segment of wall to taper in. The problem being that the 'opening' object in the family only works in elevation. I tried using void masses in the door family but this didn't work either.

I managed to fudge a work-around using thinner walls to make the shape and then connecting the thicker wall.

Any ideas would be much appreciated.

Andy

Hi, you can create that portion of wall by create in-place in the category of wall then it's just to put your doors or windows BUT I have (not here) a family wall based to create those kind of apperture in the wall to windows and doors 100% parametric (control the angle, lenght...)....

Hey, using a void works. Did you go to "Create Void" on the left hand side-->draw your sketch-->then use "Cut Geometry" and click the wall and the void? I did that and it worked.

Thanks for both of your quick responses.

@Typhoon. I don't think I fully understand you...do you mean using the 'wall by face' tool in masses? I've tried this and it means that I have to use thin walls around the perimeter and I'm still left with a hollow wall. However that family sounds great if you are able to post it (or email me) I'd appreciate it.

@timbo89. This may be a 'user error' or possibly I'm on a different version (Revit Architecture 2009 Student Version) but I can't get that to work. I draw the wall, then masses > create mass > void extrusion > draw the shape > select [tools>cut geometry] > select the two parts > cut appears to work fine. But when I click finish mass I get this error:

This Mass has no solid geometry for its Void Forms to cut. They must be deleted, or solid geometry added and cut.

If I use a solid mass I am unable to click on both it and the wall.

Thanks again for your help.

You can put that tapered section of the wall into your door family and give it the same material as the wall.  It can be parametric to change with the wall thickness.  The opening width will then be the door width plus the width of the tapered section.

The void does not work from the family, so will need to be done as a separate operation in the project.  Place the door and then cut the wall separately.  The void needs to be created as a wall category for it to cut the wall, not a mass.

Thanks Tim, I'm new to working with families but with a quick play I can see how that would work, I'll get a chance to try it properly tomorrow.

Also, how do you create a void as a wall category?

Thanks

If you're working in 2009, create component (in the project), and a list of categories will appear.  Choose wall and then create a void form and use it to cut the wall before finishing the component.  If you're in 2010, choose component and then model in place.  Go through the same steps.
