Is it possible to produce rendered elevations in Revit with shadows. I'm sure I saw it on a Revit gallery somewhere

yes, one way is to uncheck the perspective box while you're placing your camera.

Another way is:
Create a new deafult 3d view, or duplicate the extisting view "{3d}". Go to view/ orient/ and choose north south east or west. The advantage to this approach is that you can set the scale of the view, so your rendered elevation will be to scale.
