I've run into this problem a number of times. Basic example: I have a sweep whose path runs along three sides of a rectangle. Along the fourth side I try to run another sweep. The beginning and end of the second sweep path meet the beginning and end of the first sweep path. Revit lets me finish drawing the path, but as soon as I hit "finish sweep," an error message comes up referring to a "circular chain of reference," and I cannot complete the second sweep. I'm guessing this is related to the fact that together, the two sweep paths make a closed loop, but I don't understand why this is a problem and how to solve it. Any suggestions are most welcome! Thanks.

Would need a broken down version of the file in order to comment as it could be any number of things.

Unfortunately, I was unable to elicit the same error message from my problematic project. I would appreciate if you would read over a more detailed description, however, to see if you know the problem.
I was creating a family for double hung windows, and using a series of sweeps to add each jamb, sash, etc... my problem arose when I tried to complete the sash around a single glass pane. The sash had a different structure along one of its sides, so I attempted to use two separate sweeps- their paths together formed a complete rectangle. From what I gathered, the problem was that two separate sweeps were creating one closed path, because the problem was resolved when I offset the sweep paths from each other by a small distance. Could this touching of paths have been the problem? Why would this condition be problematic in Revit?
Thanks.

Wherever I have had a "Circuilar Chain of References" error it has been when I create a line locked in some way to another line, then i take the second line and try to lock it to the first. Its just a logical circle. Usually I just to a temporary hide on the other line and work without it for a bit. Not sure how that relates to your problem though.

As Joe outlined it will be to do with how the paths were constrained. As a general rule when i make families i don't hit the automatical locks when drawing a sketch as quite often these are constraining the elements to other elements as opposed to reference planes.
If you lock sketch lines to reference planes and not to each other you should not have this issue. Any parametrics should always be applied to the reference planes.
