When I join part of an extenal wall to another wall on the ground floor only, the upper part of the wall gets distorted. I have numerous instances of this issue on my current project. Attached are before an after images to demonstarte the problem. Does anyone know why this occurs and how to rectify it?

When you say "Join"are you talking about the wall Join condition, and not the join command I assume. Move the wall in the corridor back away from your exterior wall like you show in your first image. In plan, pick the wall, then right click on the little blue circle near the end of the wall. Choose, Disallow join. Then move that wall into place overlapping the exterior wall. Use the Join command and join the exterior and interior wall together. You may have to mess around with the exact placement of the corridor wall, but it should help you achieve the results your after. If this doesnt help, try a profile sketch to adjust the top potion of the exterior wall.
