When viewing 3d images I get surfaces that look black even though the material is gray concrete, or on one job, wood panelling. Any ideas what is wrong?

Did you turn on the "Render Apperance for shading"????

It may be that the pattern is too dense if you're displaying these. Typhoons image shows the surface pattern set to none - try that.
