Please see attached image. I would like to extend the insulation layer of the wall to the insulation layer of the roof, and cut the roof rafter where the wall insulation layer cuts through it. The roof eave (and rake) will then only consist of the insulation layer of the roof (which is sandwhiched in osb) and the roof rafter will not extend over the eave. What is the best way to accomplish this in Revit 2009? Thank you in advance.

The method that works best for me is to not include the roof structure in the roof. You can model the rafters separately ( there are some standard trusses in the library, but a bespoke one can be modelled quite quickly) and then use an array or beam system to produce the roof structure. Using this method you can overcome the problem that you describe and the roof will look correct in other sections also.

Thank you. I am not as familiar with beam systems and arrays as I have not gotten to that yet in Revit. Will dig into it but just so I'm clear, do you still create a generic roof, with the appropriate thickness, and embed the beam system in the roof? I guess I will have the same question for the walls - at some point will need to specify stud locations; do you just embed the studs and top/bottom plates in the existing walls? Thanks again.

No, I would do the structure as something completely different. Generally I just do the roof as the finished layer that extends over the eaves. In your case you can include the insulation, as this extends over the eaves. Model the structure separately, it does't have to be a beam system - you can use an array, or even model one and just copy it. Alternatively, you can draw the truss as a 2d detail if you don't need to see this in many sections. With regards to the wall studs, I generally do these as 2d repeating detail, although you might want them modelled. There are quite a few posts on this and it can be achieved in a number of ways - separately modelled, curtain wall system, railing system. When you get to this do a search on RevitCity.

Thank you. I am almost there. Please see the attached image. I took structural components out of the roof and added 2x12 structural beam as a rafter. The problem is the rafter needs to be cut plumb at ridge beam and 2-cut plumb at wall join. Do I need to create a new family with these cuts, or is there an easier way to make them on the dimensional lumber component I have used here? Seems like I should be able to just sketch the profile I want but can't figure out how to do it. Thanks again!
