I would love it if it were possible to make a material a yes/no parameter, so different types within the same family could have different finishes. I don't think it's possible to do this already, but if anyone knows otherwise, I would love it if you would let me know how! Thanks!

Just make the material an instance parameter. That will allow you to make every instance of the family a different material..
