Typically when drawing an elevation one would use different line thicknesses for different lines so as to identify how 'far' away they are. Thicker lines would be used for elements that are close, and thinner/lighter lines would be used for elements in the distance. In autoCAD this is achieved by using different line colours and assigning a line thickness to each colour. By doing this the elevation has a level of depth and reads easily.

In Revit however there is nothing like this and elevations are plotted with only one line thickness. All the lines read the same and the elevations appears flat, and with complex designs it is sometimes very difficult to identify which line is which.

I believe Revit should have a setting where at least 2 or 3 different line thicknesses can be assigned for different depths in elevation and section. When in elevation/section view the 'Model Graphic Styles' should in addition to wireframe/shading with edges/hidden lines include an option which switches to a typical AutoCAD view where the background is black and the lines in colour, each colour for a different line weight. The toggle 'thin line' function in Revit, used mostly for sections and plans, is limited in its ability in that it attempts to actually show the line thickness on the computer screen. This is fine when trying to read a section better, but this is problematic in that a screen is limited by its pixels and at a normal scale of 1:100 the slight differences in thicknes can simply not be identified on a computer screen. In autoCAD these slight differences could be identified with no problem by assigning colours.

There  are many posts on this issue.  If you search the forums, you will find some workarounds for this.

Fo now - learn how to use your linework tool and how to over-ride graphics in the view.  Right-click on the element.
