I created a new family but after doing a solid extrusion I am unable to apply a material to the object. When I go into the element properties and click on the button next to the material options it brings up the materials prompt but the materials library is not loaded. The only materials I have to choose from are, default, default light source, default roof, default wall, glass, and poche. How can I load the Revit materials library so that I am able to just choose a premade material? I'm really new to Revit so if this is an easy solution I apologize for my ignorance.

Duplicate one of them and give it a name, then when you finished the solid extrusion in the Family editor you can see the material name and in there you can assign the material you want....

But is there no way to load the premade materials list that Revit comes with? I realize I can duplicate one or create my own but I was hoping not to have to do that. Just wondering.

You can add materials in the family editor under settings/materials. I usually rename default to something I will be using in the family. Use a name that you will recognize in the project. Like Door trim.... it doesn't matter what material you assign to this in the family because you can always over-ride this in the project but whatever you assign will be used when the family is iniatially loaded.

Thanks alot guys, I see what you mean now. The problem I was having is that I didn't create a new parameter for materials and therefor when I was in my project my families would not give the option to change the materials. It works now though!
