Ok I need help from the computer guys. I know how to use one and a good bit about computers but when you start getting really technical I struggle. It seems like it is taking way to long to put out a high quality rendering. I need to improve rendering speed. Please help with some suggestions on Computer specs, or cheats maybe to decrease size of rendering. Thank you!

p.s. The attached rendering was at 80% and 17 hours /

Quality Setting on HIGH

Output settings were ResolutionPuhrinter 150 DPI

WIDTH: 14 5/8" (2191 PIXELS) HEIGHT: 9 3/4" (1459 PIXELS)

Uncompressed image size: 12.2 MB

My computer specs are as follow:

 Dell Optiplex GX280 Intel(R)

Pentium(R) 4 CPU 3.40 GHz

3.39GHz, 2.00 GB of RAM

This one it took me 3 days (76 hours) in High, 300 DPI, Dual Core 2 Duo 2.4Ghz 3Gb of Ram, now I have 8 Gb of Ram (4 Dimms 1066) in Vista 64 Bits and improve the speed in the renders and I can do several thing at the same time, make a render in one session and work in other thing in other session....

Robert, I fear it is time for you to upgrade :-)

If rendering is important to you I would suggest an intel quad, 8GB ram and Vista 64.

It is too early to spec a new i7 system just yet, as the new tech premium makes them expensive for a while.

(although if you can wait 6 months I'd hold off)

It is also wise to do away with the paging file to gain the true  power of 8gb ram.

The first question that popped in my head is do you have lighting groups set up so you can turn off the groups you don't need for the rendering you're doing?

Yes I have groups set up...actually for this rendering here I trimmed out the rest of the building so it was just the lobby. Cut the file size in half. Also a quick note I have decals applied but did not render in this one b/c i already have them rendered and it saved alot of time, not doing the decals.

Settings for this rendering are:

Setting: High

Printer: 150dpi

Width: 20" (3000pixels)

Height: 15 1/2" (2325pixels)

Uncompressed image size: 26.6 MB

Time to render 2 days 6 hours and 44 minutes

LOL... interior renders are a pain in the curse, isn't???? I hope 2010 improves the render times....

2 Days!!! Its time to look into 3ds Max Design if your rendering a lot. Revit+FBX+Max = interior renders in under an hour on a quad-core.... add in distributed rendering across a network, I get 2560x1280 renders in minutes

I downloaded a trial version of 3dsmax and when I brought that shot into max it gave me all kinds of errors and wouldnt read the lights or anything....I am sure it was a rookie mistake.

yeah it takes a little practice, I'm not that great with Max but I can get some pretty decent renders much faster than when I use to use Revit.

hmmm there's some weird artifacts in that render eventho the exposure looks good. as a revit certified professional I am shocked to see such a vague simple question. If you want faster renders you can: buy a faster workstation, reduce glossy reflections, possibly use local images not network locations, use only TGA and TIFF bitmaps as they have less uncompression time versus JPG, create a section box that cuts out geometry the camera does not see, get rid of the RPC on and uhhhh

BUY 3DS MAX!!!! Smile

Alabaster,  what is this about TIFF's?  Should i use TIFF's instead of jpeg when making custom materials?  I thought TIFF's were generally bigger than jpegs.

a jpeg is a compressed image and mental ray needs to uncompress it in order to use it. a tiff is uncompressed therefore no time to uncompact
