I am still somewhat new to revit and i am trying to figure out more about families. What is the difference between Type and instance? Is type when i want to use it in multiple drawings and instance is when i just want it custom for that drawing. Please Let me know.

When you setup new parameters in a family you are asked to select type or instance, instance allows you to change the parameter at will if you chose type you would have to go back to the family editor.

mbsteve was not quite right. Instance parameters are just that ... an instance. You can set it or change it any time for that one instance. Types can be established in the family editor but they can also be created in the project. Type parameters are used across multiple instances of the same type. As an example.... a door of the type 3'-0" .... if set correctly, all doors of that type would be 3'-0"... If you edited the type and changed the type parameter to = 3'-6" ... all doors of the type 3'-0" would now be 3'6".
