I've downloaded components from Visa Lighting.  They insert fine, they have no materials nor do they illuminate when i render.  Am I doing something wrong?

I'm having the EXACT same problem.  Everything is perfect. except that I cannot for the life of me get these things to emit any sort of light.  I d not understand families, nor can I make my own, so manufactureres providing their models are crucial to me.

Any help will be much appreciated.  you'll see the partialrendering below - note that the VISA light (circled in red) just renders as a brown box.

 Help!

I'd imagine the family has never been upgraded to the new lighting family system that came when Mental Ray was implemented.  In order to do this you must open the family and save it.  It would also make sense to either apply the IES file (if there is one) or select the appropriate light shape and emittance shape.

Lighting families are little different and trickier families to the others.  Things to look out for include ensuring that the light source isn't embedded in solid geometry also.

Open it up and give it a go, if you have trouble, post the family and I or someone will be able to take a look.

if i remember correctly the Visa lighting families arent Revit geometry, they are .sat files imported into the family editor and passed off as Revit. So they just render solid gray because the have no material assigment

I think i had tried to apply materials at one point and they still ended up just being white when rendered.  I will double check...

i emailed visa about this issue and they let me know that they're uploading their revit 2009 compatible models today (fancy that). I opened the  2008 family and it's just geometry that had lighting assigned to it.  Very odd b/c its a solid geometry, but has lighting assigned to it even though it wont do anything since its obscured by the solid.  Odd.

Lets hope these new uploads help.  Ill keep you all updated

all they did was create a new lighting family and import and ACIS Sat file. my advise would be to use their family as a template to create your own using Revit modeling tools.
