I have this annoying problem in vista - a lot of family file cannot be deleted. At least not when windows explorer is running. The revit version is 2009 and Vista is SP1. Anyway I suspect Vista is trying to generate a thumbnail, can't and hogs the file all the time. These file cannot be moved, renamed or removed and when I try to open the Revit hangs and all unsaved work is lost (somehow I can't find the journal to recover it) Is there any way to have vista leave my revit file alone? Please help

i have heard of users having this problem before. some solved their problems by using a program like this http://ccollomb.free.fr/unlocker/ HTH

Thanks, although my problem is plural (I was suppose to type 'files' but I grew so tired from losing some work and dealing with another batch of undeleteable files) Unlocker is one of the answers, another is to close explorer and use command prompt or any browser window (like browsing for files in revit) and delete/open them manually. But thats a solution to the problem of deleting or openning the file, not to the reason of the problem occuring. Eventually there will be some new file that for some reason will become locked like that and when I try to open them, bam, my revit session is gone again. I might disable the previews in Vista but actually I find the quite helpful. Especially that I store a lot of things in pdf file. I might as well not be previews but something else related to explorer. Oh, this problem with files also stops me from updating aall the families (with this autodesk tool) - it hangs every time.

from what i have been able to understand about these problems and vista, it has something to do with the User Controls for Vista accounts. if you haven't already done so do a google and you find lots of info

We are having similar problems. The unlocker file only works on 32 bit systems and we are running 64 bit so it doesn't solve our problems. It seems to affect any file that is in the folder the local file is saved under, not just the RVT files. We are looking for a work around but haven't found one yet. If you go to a DOS command prompt and shut down windows explorer you can then delete, rename etc from DOS. Assuming any body remembers those commands.
