I have a striaght run set of stairs that is between 2 walls and they automatically draw with a full railing. I loaded a hand rail family into the project and am unable to get the railing switched out to a simple hand rail. When I select it, the handrail is not listed. The hand rail is in the project browser family listing under Railings<handrail. The others are in Railings<railing. I thought I could drag the hand rail into the railings folder and it would show up as an style option when railing is selected. Not happening. How do I insert this hand rail into drawing? Or, how do I change the existing railing to a hand rail?

Thank You

I think you are talking about two differet things here.  Railing types are all system families built from profiles and panels that you can create and load.  As such, you can pick on a railing and switch it out to a different type.  What you have loaded sounds like possibly a floor or line based family and I would not know how it works.  You would have to place this just like other families based on its hosting requirements.

I suggest you go to the web library and look there.  REVIT has a rvt file ther with about 10-12 different railing types.  If you can find one that you like or is near what you want, just copy clip and paste into your model.  Now you will have a new type definition that you can swap with what you already have.
