Hi, I recently found this website and have being using the forum(search) on a dialy basis for helpful information. Our company has just started using Revit and one thing we could not seem to find is how to show joist top chord extensions on plan. We have a sloped roof with joists that have a top chord extension at the ridge.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.   Thanks again.

Hi and Welcome to Revit World, in VG you can check and control all parameters....

I have been looking in Vis/Graphics and i dont see how you can display extensions. i see overrides for cut/projection views, halftone, and transparent options for the member. It is probably very basic but i am just missing it. Thanks,

Not sure what you are getting at Typhoon.  Nothing there controls joist extensions displaying in plan.  I would love to figure this one out, as I am tired of drawing detail lines every time I extend a joist.

We are having the exact same problem and I also can't get it to show by changing the overrides in VG.

Uhhh...I'm confused now too!

So you're trying to extend the top-chord of your joists beyond the bearing line...correct?  Don't the out-of-box families do this?

See attached screenshot - the controlling parameters are the start and end extensions.  I would also recommend adding a control arrow to the family so you can see on-screen straight-away which end is which.

Does this answer the question/make sense?

The default family does allow top chord extensions.  But they only show in 3D or section views.  in plan view, the symbolic line stops short of the support.  It is the plan view that we need to figure out how to make it see the joist extension.

I haven't look at it- the family that is- but I would imagine you need to constrain the symbolic line to the geometry (not the reference planes in the family).  That's my first guess.  You may also need to change the family parameters options 'symbolic representation' to 'from family' (not 'from project').

Let me know if that works- makes sense...

emgeeo,

I looked into the joist family and the symbolic representation is currently set to 'from family'.  I also trie to find the symbolic line or the line which represents how the joist looks when at the plan view - course level...couldn't find one.  Does anyone know how this family displays the line shown in course level on plan?

Note:  In plan view on level medium or fine the extension show up, but I never display in plan view at these levels.

Thanks-

You may have to create your own...if it's 'from family' you will probably need to create your own symbolic line- constrained to the end of the top chord

Copy the family to create a new one and then in the family editor find the model line "Structural Framing [projection] in the Ref. Level : Floor Plans.  You will notice the symbolic line is constrained by the same reference plane that controls seat depth.  Add an additional reference plan as a weak reference to both sides.  Then under the types dialog add two new parameters (unless you want both symbolic extensions to be the same for both sides) for the joist extensions.  Properties should be Group parameter under: Dimensions ; Discipline: Common ; Type of Parameter: Length ; whatever name you find appropriate.

Next, set the new parameters to a reasonable default and close the properties dialog.  Grab the ends of the symbolic lines and drag them to the new reference planes.  Add dimensions between the new reference planes and the LEFT and RIGHT reference planes.  Click on the dimension(s) and click the label dropdown below the ribbon to select the new parameter(s).
