I have a very simple question. I am trying to create an opening in a wall that is 4' X 5' what is the easiest way to do this? It seems that I can control everything about an opening except the size.

Hi Aldigator, If you are trying to create a hole in a wall, you can always click your wall, then select Edit Profile on the taskbar. You will then enter sketch mode where you can draw your hole, then when you are finished, just click finish sketch. If you go back to your 3D view, you will notice you have created a hole in the wall you selected. Let me know if this helps!

That does work! Thanks. I'm in construction and I use Revit to extract quants and not to design, so I pull my hair out when I try to modify a model. Doesn't the hole in the all have variables that are Height and Width that can just be changed if need be? In other words if I made the hole 5 X 5, is there an easy way to stretch and make it 5 X 6? Or is it easier to just erase and resketch?

you could probably create a void family, but it is easier to just cut the whole in the wall editor

I would have to agree with mbsteve. There are ways to set constraints to the wall, but it would really waste a lot of time to set it up (not to mention I am not 100% how to correctly do this). You can however just move the lines as needed by re-entering the Edit Profile view after selecting your wall.

In Revit Architecture 2011, you can also use 'Wall Opening'. Select any wall, and create the opening you disired. Adjust the dimensions and it's all done.

I'd suggest using a wall opening. they handle joins intelliegently, are flexible to use without going into a sketch mode, and you can select them and enter exact dimensions through the properties bar. For rectangles, this is the way. for complex shapes, edit profile. For curved walls, openings are also the way to go.

I'd definitely create a wall based generic model opening family and add some parametrics. Much quicker to edit on the fly and do mass changes through the entire project. I agree the Opening tool is clunky and limited.
