Which truss? Just because it was uploaded her doesn't mean it works correctly. Did you change its type? You possibly changed it to dimensions that just will not work with the way the family is built.

i downloaded the standard 20% fink and the standard fink or W truss. I get the same error with each. i tried it right out of the download with no modifications. then i changed the chord members to 2x4, and established the pitch, but the modified truss and the stock one get the same error. its not giving me an option for determining the length at all. i guess i just don't get the family thing yet. i try to drag it from the project browser, and thats when i get the error. i can drag a 2x4 with no problem. when i try to install it from the type selector, it's not available. when i try the

I would say that you are probably trying to place it using Revit Architecture or MEP. The truss placement tool is only available in Revit Structure. However, interestingly enough, you could move, copy, and do a lot with them in Revit Architecture if they were already in the project. Workaround would be to copy and paste from another project. You can even swap out the type and family. Here's the test file I made with trusses already placed.

Sorry, the file was too large and it took too long, so I thought I was having internet problem and killed the browser. I've purged the file and re-posting. Try my suggested workaround. You can do a lot with just copying and pasting the truss. You even get the attach truss tool.

qthdad, thanks. I didn't get the file, but i think i see. Autodesk has made it so that you have to have the structure revit in addition to the architectural revit in order to do everything needed to complete a project....nice. i am in fact using the architecture revit, so you are right. thanks again for your help. doug

Check this out. http://augiru.augi.com/content/library/au07/data/paper/SE304-2.pdf It actually shows how you can take a flat truss, attach to roof, and it turns into a hip roof truss.
