so, this is our first full revit project, and I'm about to upload the model for our structural consultant to work in. should I use the "detach from central" option and save that new file that is detached from central to upload for them? thanks.

I hope you mean the consultants will link this file - NOT WORK IN! The file should be a detached file and each time you make it, it should be the same name. Then the cosultant can just reload the link.
