Hi, I am using Revit Architecture 2009 and I am re-creating a church from existing drawings for some renovations. I have created the entire building except for this small dome above the altar area. (I have attached a PDF of the existing drawing so you can see the dome I am creating) In plan, it has an octagonal shape and in section it looks to have two different slopes, so it is not a typical rounded dome shape. This is my first complex project in revit, I have only done one other simple project (A square warehouse) in revit...do I mass the dome somehow? I have created families and added materials for the large wooden arches, but have no experience creating masses with the massing tool (except for simple boxes), so please describe in detail the steps I need to take...What the best way to create this? Thanks

I think i use 2 mass "Solid Blend" to create that then apply "Roof by Face"... See the video:http://screencast.com/t/V4mpObX0oU0

Thanks! The massing worked perfectly! The only problem I am having now is attaching the "dome" to a 4:12 pitched roof. How do I get it to attach to the roof (right now it looks like its floating in elevation views)? And how do I cut the opening in the pitched roof where the dome will sit? I tried the join roof tool but its not working for me. Thanks again for your help!

YOU MIGHT TRY USING A TRIANGULAR PRISM VOID IN YOUR MASS THE SLOPE OF THE ROOF THE DOME ATTACHES TO. THEN YOU CAN MAKE THE DOME THE EXACT SHAPE IT NEEDS TO BE. IN THE SKETCH MODE FOR THE SLOPED ROOF YOU CAN THEN JUST PUT A CLOSED LOOP FOR THE HOLE WHERE THE DOME IS. BECAUSE OF THE WAY THAT WE'RE MAKING THE ROOF, I DO NOT BELIEVE THAT THE JOIN ROOF COMMAND WILL WORK.

Thanks for all your help! The dome looks like a dome now and came out looking pretty good in rendering. I used solid and void massing to create the final product. It still needs some tweeking but at least I have something that looks right. Thanks again!
