I'm not entirely clear what you are trying to do, but it sounds like you are trying to get Revit to be an image editing software like photoshop? Can't you use photoshop or gimp to edit them first and import them afterwards?

Well, when I edit the image in photohop and save as a tiff it imports as a square white box with the image. And what I am trying to import is just a signature with a transparent background so I can see what is behind it. In CAD you could essencially crop any shape you wanted, so I would import the tiff (in CAD) and make crop around the signature. I tried doing this with the mask tool but I dont think I am using it properly. Any thoughts?
