Is there a way to apply a template to a whole category of views (plans, sections, elevations, etc) without having to go through the project browser, select the views and then apply the view new template? For instance, I have a view template created specifically for interior elevations (that is different than one used for the exterior elevations). When I place the elevation tag in the plan and go to that view, I want the view to automatically have the Interior elevations template applied to it. Currently I have to create the view and then manually switch the template to the correct one.

One thing you can do is create your views ... goto the browser and they should all be together - select them all and goto their properties and set the view template there. Now while having these views selected, select apply view template - select default and the vie template you set in the view parameters will be applied.

Thanks. This is what I've been doing so far. I was just wondering if there was a way to do it automatically when the tag is placed in a drawing that generates the view so I don't have every time I make a new view I don't have to manually change it to the correct view template. When a plan or elevation/section is generated it has a default view template associated with it. I was just curious to know if this default view template could be changed to another one.

No view really has a view template assigned to it until you set it. You can verify this by looking at the view properties - no view template name will be listed. When you create a view, REVIT uses a view template but does not assign it. I do not know how to set which template REVIT uses when it does this. NOTE: I believe it is best practice to assign the view template when you create the view.

Thanks- though I think I've found a way to do what I've been talking about. When I have a view selected and right click to "Apply View Template", there's a box I can check at the bottom of the "Apply View Template" tool that says "Apply automatically to new views of same type". When I check this box with the right template selected, whenever I make a new interior elevation, the that template is applied to it.

OK... I remember that box ... I just don't use it. REMEMBER THIS THOUGH! This template is only used when you create the view and when someone does a different type of view ... maybe with different scales.... you may get messed up. IT's STILL BEST PRACTICE to set the view template to what you want THAT view to be.
