two building elevations show show the earth fill hatch at areas below grade. the other two show no earth below grade and provide clear unobstructed view of underground foundations. settings on each of the elevation tags are consistent. Why the variation?

You don't say anything about VG. Did you check that?

NO BUTS ABOUT IT! You are not seeing a problem with REVIT ... Just a USER error. Unless you are doing other strange things, check your VG FIRST!!!! If you can't see the problem there, then then next logical question is did you hide the site in these views?

I'm not saying its not user error however, what am i looking for in VG? I created all of these views the same way. I have not hid anything in any view. I'm not that sophisticated.

OK ... here is a quick way to assure that your VG settings are the same. - Find the good elevation view in your browser ... lets say it's South.
- Right click on the name and pick "Create view template from view" - Name the template "Good elevation".
- Right click on the bad elevation ... lets say it's North. Click on the properties button.
- Pull dow to the Identity area ... Default View Template and click on the pull-down at the end of the line and pick the view template "Good elevation".
- Click OK
- Now right click on the bad elevation "North" and click on apply default view template.
Both views will now be set the same and if you have done nothing else, then your ground "Topo" should show.

Thanks for the clear, concise explanation. A newbie appreciates it.

it also could be where the elevation is starting from, maybe its not out far enough from the topo so it is cutting thru it

That Guy solved it. the "view line" was behind the elevation marker in two cases and in front of the other two. Why that makes a difference I dont understand-- thanks for all the help.

Glad you found what had happened. You had moved a view marker but not the view. With both interior and exterior elevation sysmbols, the actual reference line is seperate from the view symbol. This is so that you can control the placement of the symbol. Really useful with interior views. To move the elevation symbol only, click on the circle of interior elevations or the box of exterior elevations and move these... the actual view cutline will not move. To move both the elevation symbol and the view cut line, select the box or circle along with the view pointer (crossing works but you may get something else too unless you filter). To only move the view line, just click on the pointer.
