Items such as gas cookers etc dont show any detail in 2d plan views. In 3d I can see all the cooking rings/knobs etc. can i get this in 2d view? I've tried changing scales/model graphics and detail levels. Thanks a lot.

You must edit the family and check the "Visibility" parameters for the components, you can also create "model lines" for whatever you want and change the "Visibility" control in plan, section, elevation and so one....
