Any thoughts as to why the "cut plane" option is greyed out??

because the cut-plnae is always associated to the level that you are on and should not be associated to another level from the current level. you can ajust it's offset from that level. but you cannot associate it to a level that is different than the current level you are on. at least i think that's how it is intened to work. maybe someone else can shed more light on the subject.
