in course mode, a beam in plan view appears as a solid black line. is there a way to change this line in the settings to a hidden line (maybe in object styles?)?? i am aware of using the linework tool but my firm is strongly opposed to the linework tool.

One way we make things appear the way we want is to create a filter.  If you do not know how to do this, you go to the settings tab at the top of the screen and click on filters.  A new box will open.  Click on new. Name the filter in a way to describe what you are changing (i.e. Beam below or beam dashed) and then click the "Select" bubble and hit OK.  Then you simply select all the members that you want to look like this and click on "finish" over on the left hand side of your screen.  Once you have done this, go to Visability Graphics and click on the Filters tab.  Click "Add".  This will bring up the list of filters that you have created.  Click on the desired filter and hit ok.  Then you can override the line type or other properties.  This will only change the appearance in the view that you do it in.

If you ever have to add members or remove members from a filter simply go back to settings and click on filters.  Select the filter you are wanting to change and click edit.  Then if you look on the left side of the screen there are commands for adding or removing from filter.

Hope this helps.

Mike

Take a look at this link to a screencast of the steps used to make this filter.  There is no sound, but hopefully you will be able to see the steps involved.
