Basic background, I have used AutoCAD for 15 years, but this is only my second day using Revit. I have watched a few videos and have a good grasp on how to use it.

Our clients are having trouble "checking out" items (I guess families). They want to give us the structural parts of the model to edit only. Is there a good place to learn how to do this? Is it as simple as it sounds or complex?

Any help would be great.

Alright, this should help. I guess the correct term for this is "Check out a Workset" and then return it with the Copy Monitor Tool. A few firms want us to use this to add our changes to their model, however know one seems to know how to make it work.

You probably do not share the central file with your consultants so don't look at checking out worksets.  Instead, read up on the Copy/Monitor process.  Very complicated but this is something you need to learn.  Also read the discussions here and on AUGI about the copy/monitor process.

There is a white paper on the autodesk website that may be helpful.
