after much trial and error:  the problem in renderings is having the sunlight overpower the interior renderings with washed out hot spots at the windows.  Daylight portals didn'tt help.  Then i realized 2 things:

1.  somethimes 3d views get created in and EARLIER PHASE than the lights that get inserted.  you have to re-set the phase of the view or else the lights just don't appear.

2.  In some twisted effort to drive me nuts re-re-re-rendering a scene while and saving the planet one lighbulb at a time, all light fixtures come from Autodesk set to 12 watts.   re-set to 100w and they actually cast some light.  (clik on the light, "element properties / light properties", scroll down).  that re-sets them all.

3. recessed fixtures are fabricated to have the light source ABOVE the ceiling so they don't cast any light.  Edit the family, move the light source down.
