I am working in Revit 2009. I am trying to create a solid sign with a backlight (probably from rope lights). What is the best way to create this and render it? I have tried to set a solid to self luminance but that just makes that object glow and it isnt bright enough

I created backlit signs by having two different materials in the sign face. Each one has a different transparency setting if you place lights behind it. Otherwise set each material to a different level of self luminousity. These were lettered signs. I imported cad lettering to get the linework. Once you have the letter sketch for the letters, you use the same sketch to cut the background.
