Hi all. I was wondering if anyone had any ideas on how I can get around "Out of Memory" errors. I work in a large multi discipline organisation using RAC, MEP & STRUCT 2009. We are nearing the end of a medium to large project (305Mb) we have RAC & STRUCT in the same file and all other disciplines have the main file linked into their project and they are linked into the main file.(ELECT, MECH, HYD,COMMS & FIRE) We are constantly being troubled with "Out of Memory" errors and are saving & turning Revit off upto 10 times a day to conter the problem. MEP users with much smaller files (40Mb) are experiencing similar problems & have the added problem of long delays when asking Revit to modified already created piping & ductwwork runs etc. We all use similar systems HP & DELL dual core 6600 with 4Gb ram on 32 bit XP PRO we also all run on a large network. Any advise would be appreciated

Thanks Coreed for replying, I have seen this article before & believe that we comform to it in general and don't beleive that we differ in any significant way. But still we don't seem to be able to perform. We can't be the only firm experiencing these problems has any body else been experiencing this problem and do they have any work around. We had a dead line yesterday for drawings to go to the QS. They didn't go because we couldn't write the PDF files. We kept running out of Memory. Our office is a Revit/AutoCAD/ArchiCAD split and these types of problems makes the Revit users look like fools compared to those using ArchiCAD. John A.

Do you understand how to use worksets? Do you keep linked AutoCAD files to a minimum and only load them as required?I would also ask how well do you maintain your files? Do you regularly compress, audit and do you review your warnings and keep them to a minimum? 305Mb is a very large file ... not saying that it's wrong.

WWHub, We use worksets maybe a few more than some think is necessary, but with up to 15 user in the file at any time these seem necessary (5-6 WS per floor - 5 Floors some general WS maybe 8-9) we do compress the file reguarly, we can't purge the file because we run out of memory. The file has been as large as 390Mb, we create a new Central (with a new name) every 2 weeks, this generally looses 100-150Mb, but the size of the file climbs quickly with the number of users. I also find that once the file become unsable (out of memory) reducing the file size doesn't seem to have very much impact on performance. John A

A couple of suggestions. First, you did not indicate that you regularly use the Tools/Review Warnings. As I understand it, ignored problems will create problems like you have. You can't fix all of the problems but you might be surprised at what you find here. Second, it sounds like you have plenty of worksets (too many I think) but do individuals only open the worksets they need? Third, you don't need to use the purge command to get rid of unused families. You can delete them one at a time from the browser. I regularly delete unued types this way. You can right click and if select all instances is ghosted, there are non used so you can delete it.... or just hit the delete key first amd REVIT will warn you if there are any in use. Finally - did you do a lot of in place families .... or did you copy in-place families? I have found that both of those can create lots of problems.

I must admit that we don't check the Tools/Review Warnings regularly, but last we looked, 2 weeks ago there didn't seem to much to worry about. I'm not to sure what consistutes to many WS. I peresonally find that they're more of an assistance than a problem. Finally we try to limit in-place familes as much as possible. We had our Revit Supplier look at the file & he couldn't find much to comment about. We did have some what of a break through today. We are a very large organisation and have a seperate company of 100's to look after our computing needs. They provide us with all of our OS needs & roll out all new programmes. After testing on friday it appears that they havent installed the 3g switch propertly. I had them upgrade our boot.ini files to reflect Autodesk recommendations & guest what a 50-75% reduction in Out of Memory issues. Maybe we'll get this project finished after all. Thanks for all your help & suggestions John A.
