I want to create a door panel family with an instance parameter for either a wood or hollow metal material. I would like the value of either "WD" or "HM" to be in a drop down slection box so the user does not have to type anything. The material will be inclided in the door schedule. How do I do this

You don't want much.... Look in your help under "Creating a Type Catalog"

You can't get a drop down list in the family ... but you can have a type catalog ... next best thing.
