Can I import CAD details that I've downloaded from manufacturers into my wall detail view. It keeps telling me that you can't see the object in the current view.

Yes you can but be careful of CAD imports.  You can really overload your project if you explode them.  Read up on this in the help and the many topics on this list under "import".

Ok, I think I figured out the best way to do this. I made a new detail component family and imported the detail to there. then I exploded it and fixed the colors and line weights and loaded it into my project. This seems to work pretty well. I have a detail from a manufacturer though that doesn't come in to scale. I think I'll have to try rescaling it in cad before importing it. Weird that a manufacturer can't scale there drawings correctly.

If this is truely a detail component and not a detail then you did right..... except....

How did you fix the lines?

Here is a tip for you.   When you explode a cad dwg, the lines are all named according to the layer they were on in cad.  All of these extra line descriptions will also add up to extra space lost.  To reduce that,, before you bring the dwg in, change all of the lines to layer .  Now all of the lines will become linetype 0 and you can pick the ones you want to be "detail", heavy, light or whatever.  Before you are done though, delete the linetype 0 from settings/object styles in the family editor.
