I'm designing a childrens museum and the elevator is supposed to resemble a hot air balloon. How would I do something like that in revit? I'm not a very advanced user

Seems like that since you are the designer, you need to find out what to do mechanically and how it should look.  Then come make and ask how to model it in REVIT.

I'm just a student, it's not going to be built.... so the mechanics of it are not important. I think I figured it out. I'm just going to so a revolving sweep and see if I can get it to render ok.

Hi, you don't put any image to what do you need, so you can do it in the several ways, Solid Revolve solve that, depend the shape you want

mmadams2 ... a little more description in your question would have resulted in a different answer.  You asked how to do the elevator - not how to create a ballon shape.  Knowing that you were a student and that this is not a real project also is important.

Sounds like you have discovered what you need.   Good Luck
