Ok so I've taken the trainning couse and now im starting a simple building but I've gotten stumped and no matter how much seaching and reading i do there just doesn't seem to be any good insturctions on how to do certain things.

What I want to do is make a tradtional window that can be ajusted with the parameters to suite a variety of jobs.  I've gotten the frame and sash to adjust through parameter inputs but when it comes ot the muntins all goes out the door.  I've looked at some other windows that have similar parameters but I just cant get things to work.  When looking at other's windows I've noticed that the horizontal and vertical window mullions are a seperate families (where their parameters are set) that are brought into another family where they are put together ot form the horizontals and verticles.  Then that family is broght into where the window family is and from there its all put together somehow and you can adjust the parameters that were set in the orginal separate mullions family.  I have a bunch of question after working for 9 hours and getting no further than the frame. Here is a basic list of questions:

1. is there a specific family you should start with for making the mullions work so that you can make a specified quantity to divide equally form a specified height or width.

2. how do you nest a family (such as the mullion families) into another family and how do you place them in the drawing acurately - for instance putting the horizontal and vertical mullion family in between the sashes of the window frame.

3. When trying to nest families how do you get the parameter inputs to carry over to the new families adjustable  "family" inputs.

4. I there any good info on the net about this?

I realize that I could maybe just find these window on the internet but that wont teach me anything, i need to understand the how's and whys?  I know this is alot at once but I'm quite frustrated so if I've misspelled or used the wrong Revit terminology please forgive me.

Hi and Welcome to Revit World, you have a lot of questions, i think you must read first the tutorials "FAMILIES GUIDE", here you can download: http://usa.autodesk.com/adsk/servlet/item?siteID=123112&id=11091739

The families are (i think) the most important thing in Revit, if you understand how do you must create them you can do ALL (not all but..) what you want, you can create the window/door by seperated family or create them only in one family.

Also, see this "Simple Window", pick in the "Muttins" edit and check the parameters like you can do a simple windows and you don't need (for now) to import (nested) other muttins family.

hey ,

i am also trying to make a window and have some doubts although the doubts are more general.

1. why am i not able to draw detail lines in family editor

2. when i want to show symbolic lines ( instead of detail lines) in exterior elevation , why do i see them also in interior elevaiton ie why are sybolic lines seen in opposite view.

say for eg . i want to show some joinery only by symbolic lines in exterior elevation(like shutter swing) but not interior , and i make them with symbolic lines, i still see them in interior elevation . why?

Hi "3drulez" you must try to Start using th HELP menu from revit, it's very helpfull and easy to use, try also to go here and see the tutorials: http://usa.autodesk.com/adsk/servlet/item?siteID=123112&id=11091739

although i have not read the help file. i have read the mastering revit architecture by sybex publication book completely and thoroughly. i have been lucky enough to get 13 gb of tutorials by daryl gregoire. and i have gone through them . but this one point i think is not mentioned there too.

this thing of not being able to make detail lines in a family editor is a big handicap. i then used model lines to show door swings in elevation as a workaround.

thanks.
