I am a student and I am doing the tutorial for 2009 Revit.  I am trying to dimension a garage wall which is a 2x4 wall to the house which is a 2x6 wall.  This question may have been asked, but why is it when I dimension an exterior wall to the exterior face it is different than the witness dimension.  The witness dimension goes to a different spot on the exteior face than the linear dimension (also to the exterior face).  My dimension is supposed to be 28' which it is when I draw the wall with the witness dimension, but when I use the dimension command, it dimensions 27'-11 3/4".  Any thoughts?

Some things to look at

  • Check your dimension units & model units to see if there is any rounding.
  • You can move your temporary dimensions - make sure they are to the correct face.
  • Make sure your dimensions are to the correct face.  When you dimension, you may have to tab through severl planes that are where you are pointing.

There are several things you can do. The first is to simply keep in mind that your temporary dimension (I am assuming that by witness dimention you mean the temp dimension you get when you select the wall) is not measuring from where you need to diemension, and add or subtract from that as needed so the wall ends up where you need it. The other thing is do is put your linear dim on the wall, and then adjust it as nessasary. When you select the wall you should see the linear dim change toa  temp dim which you can edit. Pick the wall, then change the 27'-11 3/4" to 28'-0". That should move the wall.

Well now I have the problem of not getting any temp dimensions to show up.  On my project, I can only get the interior walls and 2 exterior walls to show temp. dims.  Also, is there a way to edit linear dims.  Whenever I try to edit the dimension it says it can only be replaced with text.
