Went through the Revit help topics and Tatjana's Mastering Revit Architecture book and have added new .rfa profile and .rft families to the project. The family tree shows them being added but they aren't availible when I try to get the roof to host the sweep. There is some little trick that I am missing. Help!

Just because the profile is there doesn't mean it's available to you yet. You have to set that under the type properties. Start the sweep command then modify your type adding a new type and selecting your profile.... That is if you set the profile use to the correct category when you created the profile.

That is if you set the profile use to the correct category when you created the profile. I have taken the one and only fascia sweep that comes up when I try to have my roof host a sweep, saved it as a new name, modified it, saved again, and loaded it into the project and it is not available when I try to have my roof host a sweep. Then I go to the family editor, to the hosted profile, create the sweep, add it and same thing. There is obviously something about designating the profile or family as something roof related that I am ignorant of. Can you 'splain it to me, Lucy' as Desi would say?

In the family editor - look under settings/categories and parameters then pull down the profile usage and pick the correct category.

.....................you got me this far and now I have another problem. I keep getting a "could not create fascia" error message when I try to use this profile (which is now available when hosting roof sweep) as an attached sweep. This is a 2x6 vertical fascia board that I am attempting to attache "under" the edge of the roof. Am I in one of those "you can't get there from here" moments?

The insertion point is the edge of the roof. If you want the sweep located somewhere else, move it in the family. It does not have to be at the insertion point.
