in revit 2009 has anyone had problems with groups becoming inconsistent and then ungrouping? this happened when I changed one level independent of the others, and what is even odder is that it only broke some (at least half) of the groups not all that had been placed in the unit. what causes this, shouldn't the unit just respond to the level change without ungrouping itself?

Groups are notoriously difficult to control. Yes, they break apart all the time, particularily when you mirror or rotate them, quite often families in those groups will not appear in all instances. There are no specific answers, however things to avoid in groups are: Model lines In place families - especially sweeps Walls that join to non group walls (ie. disallow join at ends of walls - this is not absolutley required but can help.) Ceilings/floors/ walls that are locked to anything when you create it. Also be wary of families in the groups that are workplane based - after inserting them it can help if you disassociate them from the work planes. Like I said there is not Black and white answer. Sometimes it is worth going through and removing the problematic component from the group and trying another one in it's place to see if it will behave better. HTH
