I would like to add a diagonal hatch to a floor surface in 3-d. I would like this hatch to behave like a model line in the sense that it exists 3-dimensionally, but I would like to add it line a filled region. My initial thought is to split a face and apply a new material. Before I go through this, does anyone else have a different idea?

Why not add a model hatch to your floor material?

I only want part of the material to be hatched though. Would I have to split the face, and add the unique material with the hatch to the split face that I want hatched?

If you have a different floor material I would use a different floor.  So draw the floor that you dont want a hatch only where you want that, then do a different floor where you want the one with the hatch.  (Unless you are doing this for a code plan where you are using a hatch for exit coridors, in that case I am not sure how to go about it)
