Right now that i have the hang of creating families my next question is this,

why when i come to render newly produced families does it ignore/give random shades when rendering?

i've attached the families in question and also a jpg of the render - its very very basic as i'm at the very start of producing a drawing and fancied seeing how it'd look rendered.  The column in the rendering that has come out correctly is a standard Revit family. As far as i can see my new families match all the properties of the standard one.

 Thanks in advance

 Adam

Hey, you have the correct paramaters in your family in regards to material, but you haven't linked the material parameter to your geometry. Select your solid geometry (both extrusions of your family)-->element properties and you should see a "Materials" on the left with "By Category" next to it. Click the button shown in the picture, and you should see "Material". Select it and now your geometry will be linked to your chosen material.
