I am reasonably new to Revit, although I have had some basic training. How do you draw a steel portal frame?
I can add beams as families but it doesn;t have the haunch as the two opposing beams don't meet?

Best bet is to make a family for the entire portal as we have in our office (but this would most likely be a pretty complicated family for a newby - if you wanted to make it parametric).
You could however use the beams as currently doing and create a family for the haunch.
This is what the structural tools intend you to do which is why steel beams leave a gap next to other elements to either allow for a weld or joining plate/bracket.
HTH.
