How do you create an align symbol that's completely adjustable in plan, where I can just drag and pull the ends to increase/decrease the length and width?   I already have one which includes parametric length and width, but that becomes and guessing game in order to get the desired alignments

You can put an invisible line in your family where you want to align to.

This looked interesting. I just tried to build this algin symbol. See attached rfa. I cannot seem to get the 'align' tool to recognize any linework in the annotation family other than the default reference planes from that template. With or without the invisible lines. In fact I can't seem to get an annotation symbol to be 'grip' flexable or manually flexable in any way, other than via a parameter as suggested by darko. Thoughts? The generic Annotation template does not allow the creation of reference planes. Only reference lines. Can you make an annotation family grip flexable? Seems to me I have struggled with this in the past.

dgcad,  Darko did not mention an annotation family so I assumed he meant aligning some other family... but assuming anything is a mistake on my part.

Darko, if you were talking about having an alignment element in a family, then my advice stands.  If you are talking about a parametric family that is adjustable, you need a reference plane in the family with an instance based parameter that locates it and your elements locked to that reference plane.  Reference lines will not work.  When you load a family with this, you will get a grip that you can adjust .... but that is not aligning.

Yes WWhub that is good advice when creating model families. The problem is an annotation family does not give you the option of placing reference planes. I believe when darko says align 'symbol' he means annotation symbol. You cannot snap to, grip or align to annotation symbol linework other than it's default cross hair reference planes?

What I did to be able to align a symbol was to add an invisible line where I needed to align, and made that line a strong refrence. You could then dimension to that invisble line and add a parameter to be able to adjust where your align line is.

to claifry, i was referring to a parametric family that is adjustable.  I was trying to build an align tool just the same way as dgcad did, and just like dgcad I discovered that without the option of reference planes, the completed annotation won't "grip" and is not flexible when loaded in the family.

I believe this is what you are looking for.  It has symbolic elements loaded into a detail family, this was the only way I was able to have grips.  I know this thread is old but hope this helps
