Afternoon chaps! Had a search through the forum but couldn't seem to find anything matching what I'm after. I'm trying to find out any information on whether or not it's possible to set up a wall/floor/roof in Revit and have the material properties transfer over to IES <VE> when it's exported via gbxml. For example, could I set up a 500mm cavity wall (125mm brick, 125mm air gap, 250mm concrete block) in Revit and then have it's thermal properties automatically transferred to IES <VE> when the model is exported from Revit? Or do you always have to re-assign the construction types manually in IES <VE> after importing a gbxml file? We are currently using both Revit Architecture 2009 and Revit MEP 2009 as well as a couple of seats of Arch & MEP 2008, importing models into IES <VE> 5.8.2.1

I don't think this can be done. Let's see why. How do we make materials in Revit ? We duplicate the default material and assign render appearance and cut patterns. and so on ... bla, bla, bla.. So for Revit, all materials are same with different appearance. Now what happens when IES detects these materials ? Where are thermal properties to calculate thermal load ? Where are glass properties to calculate daylight calculations ? Are you getting my point ?

Wow, thanks for the sarcasm, I obviously wasn't aware that the Revit Oracle cruises these boards, so sorry for wasting your valuable time with my valid question oh great one. Perhaps it was wrong of me to assume that since the gbxml file type is quite capable of transmitting thermal properties, and because you can assign some physical properties to materials in Revit that it might be logical to assume there would be some way of assigning thermal properties to different constructions in Revit to save you having to re-assign that information again in IES. Y'know what BIM being a major selling point of Revit and all.

I know how to export gbXML and I've done it many times. You're missing my point. But no use of discussing it with such language as you use here. So if you think you have a better idea, I'd be glad to know when you succeed in exporting it. Thanks, REVIT MASTER !

My sympathies with Kobbs on this one - I had over expectations of the potential ability of the gbxml file export process. The link with Revit is best seen as a means of not having to re-build the model in IES - but even then there are problems as the IES model does not always properly interpret non-orthogonal information - a particular problem with exisiting buildings.
