why does this occur? It doesn't occru all the time, usually when I am snaping to an existing dim line

Like you said, "They don't happen all the time." I usually have that error msg when I alter wall or elements with another type that were previously dimensioned (having locked or constraint). Don't ignore the msg and click the Show button to locate the conflict. Though those dimensions can be removed, see to it that they do not disturb the relationships you have created by locking and contraining your elements.
