I have come across a church project. Can anybody give me some pointers on pricing structure in general and also on this project (see attachment) Per sq. ft? Hourly? To an architect what is it worth to have it completely drawn up? Thanks!

Is it NCARB, AIA, neither or both that discourage (or prohibit) discussions of fee structure and amount as a matter of professional ethics?

Im not sure what the ethics are of this at all. However there is not enough information as the the relationship of the church project to parleyburnett to "the architect" therefore any answer is of no substance to begin with. Plus I would just pull something out of nowhere just for fun. It think that is worth 3,000,000 of an unstated currency.

(S)he said they "came across a church project". What more do you need to know? Without saying too much and getting myself in trouble, your number sounds about right for basic services. Additional additionals obviously apply.

It would be nice to know if the circumstances were that they fired the first architect because he got sick of dealing with the church building committee that kept changing their minds back and forth and totally refused to pay the architect for changes even though documents had already been issued and then refused to pay what they owed. Then they went out and hired another architect that they want to copy the first plans and then found out that the second architect claims that he can't just steal the first architects work that he hasn't even been paid for yet! They can't believe him that the second architect claims he needs as much money to do the project as the first first architect needed. I mean they already didn't pay the first architect to do all this work. Because if they are using this forum to question the fees of an architect then the work is worth millions of currency and if they would like to take the DIY method then I hear there is a program at the local university that says they can get you your license after about 10 years of school and work experience. Man I should have gone into writing books, or a psychic.

Woah...de ja vu! That seems eerily familiar... ...almost as if I've been in that situation every church project before. I'm just trying to keep myself from pointing out the code issues in that plan.

I don't see a single problem. But man they have got some cash for some serious long span trusses in that plan.

I attended an educational seminar that said that architectural pricing should be based on the value of the project to the client. Construction costs are easy to determine - price the material and the labor. The value of a good design is much more valuable, because people will want to be there. Sydney opera house: Original construction cost estimate ~$30M. Final construction cost well over $300M. However having an Icon to the world is priceless. How many billions of dollars has come to the city because of this very expensive building? Look at cathedrals built to last centuries. The construction cost was astronomical. The architects were employed for generations. These structures still stand and still bring in income. Think about your project. What are its goals? Is it a warehouse? Is it designed to last 10 years? 100 years? 1,000 years? How much income do you expect to get from it? Will you ever expand it? What will happen inside the building? Do you even need a building? You would do well to pay your architect to get what you want, otherwise you will have to pay again and again and again.
