I am using Revit MEP 2009. Does anyone know how to change the category of a family? For example, I have created an electrical revit file which has an architetural revit file linked into. In the electrical revit file, I have placed some "revit standard" light fixtures and single pole light switches. I went to change the line weight of the light switches so they would plot out darker than the background. It took me forever to figure out which category to go to, to get the light switches to change line weight. You would think to go to VG>Model Categories>Lighting Devices. But NOOOO, you have to go VG>Annotation Categories>General Annotations (WWHHYY!?!?). So, is there any way to change the category so that it is "assigned" to lighting devices instead of General Annotations?

Your family is a symbol (annotation), that's why it's where it is.  These are not fixtures.  BTW - when you changed the lineweight for these symbols, you changed them all.  Instead, you can modify the annotation family in the family editor.

If you want a model family (2d or 3d) that is controlled through the VG model tab, then you must create or find a model family - not annotation family.  BUT - Be aware of what you are doing.  Annotations are view specific.  Model elements- both 2d & 3d will span multiple views.

The advantage of the model family is that it can be sceduled, counted and tagged.  The annotation is "dumb".

Thanks for the input. How do I find out what type they are (annotation, model, etc...)?

They are located in your family menu tree according to type.

But when I go the family tree, I find my lighting switches under Families>Lighting Devices - not Annotation Symbols. So how do I know this is an annotation family as opposed to a model family?
