Heres an intersting one. I tried to add some ymbolic lines to my windows so that i can show the movement direction of the window and the 3 line hatch to represent glass. When i import this back into my model, it says it cannot make type and offers to delete the family. Ive accepted this to see what happens and the window is there but it is all skewed and in this instance, the bottom part of a double hung is half the window. Anyone have this happen? WHY didnt Autodesk make their window components to have these STANDARD annotations? I find more and more that the out of box components that come with Revit suck and more work is required to revise them rather than making from scratch. Any ideas? thanks.

The main reason is that Autodesk has to make these components "standard" for everyone across the globe. Autodesk actually did a really good job of giving people just enough in their library components to make them easily "standard" to the regioun they work in. Unfortunately the standards for construction and graphical representation are not the same in Dubai as they are in Kalamazoo. Now I will agree with the statment about revising versus from scratch, and i believe this stems from Autodesk recycling families from previous versions of revit instead of making new versions from the new software. This makes many of the families error prone straight from the factory (had to deal with one of these a couple weeks ago in fact). Regarding your family, it looks as though something has gone wrong with your sash extruction. If you check the types inthe family editor, you'll see the bottom left sash member (looking from the Exterior view) doesn't flex properly. Then when you get down to anything in the 16"x##" types you get your errors. It looks like there may also be an issue with some constraints on the symbolic lines you placed. Somehow they are tied in with teh bottom of your sash and looks like they get squeezed out of place in types smaller than 24".

You fell victim to one of the classic blunders. The most famous is never get involved in a land war in asia, but only slightly less well known is this! Never go in against a Sicilian when death is on the line! |

Thanks. This was an out of the box Autodesk family so it was hard to decipher where the containts were and why. I will revise and hopefully get it into the model for CD!! This is more of what i meant - this window should be properly locked and able to resize for any size. I want to trust the families I get - you are right I can always add hatch and swing elevations myself. but if the window in itself doesnt work, then I get frustrated. Thanks for the help. Cheers
