Is there a way to break or split a wall sweep. I am using a sweep for a wall cap on a parapet wall. I need to break it to add small decorative precast pieces at intervals along the wall cap. I would also like to show the sweep return at each break.

There's this blue dot at your sweep ends. Drag them as you like. You can copy them along the same line, just unchecked the Constraints button at the option bar.

Do a Host wall sweep from Modelling Tab on your wall (any profile). Revit won't allow you to overlap sweep. So before doing a copy of the sweep, drag the blue dots on either end to size your sweep. From the elevation view, you can make a copy of the sweep along the same line or some other place on the same wall (uncheck your constraint to copy elsewhere).

I keep trying this, but I get the same message "elements were deleted". I know I have made this work in the past. Could it be a problem with 2009. I just updated to the latest build.

Try offsetting your sweep with a small gap from your opening. If the sweep aligns with the opening, it cuts itself automatically and if it's the same length with the opening it will be deleted.

I know this is a very old thread, but I was having the same problem ("element was deleted" when using Copy make separate segments of skirting board. I found that it only works if I copy the new segment onto a different sweep path (i.e. I copy it slightly up the wall), then I can move back down to floor level. Maybe there's a better way, but it works at least...
