Revit seems to default to prn files when plotting to file. Several printing services I use seem to be baffeled by them and say they are unstable.
There has to be a reason that Revit defaults to prn files and an easy way to view and plot these files.
Could anyone enlighten me on this subject?

We use PDF and DWF as they are better formats. Most print houses these days (at least in our area) seem to prefer PDF as do most clients as Adobe Acrobat Reader is on almost all PC's. The PRN file is something that was created in the old DOS days and I haven't used them is at least 10 years.

PRN files and PLT files are interchangable. Rename a PRN to PLT, and it will work. Same exact file, different extension.
